Japan and the world at large now face serious social challenges in the run-up to the mid-21st century. Among these are accelerating globalization, radical technological innovation, rapidly aging populations in both emerging and advanced economies, and resulting disparities in various aspects of social life.

Against this background, the Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS). Hitotsubashi University was established in 2014 under the direct supervision of the university president to promote cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research in the social sciences and to act as a hub of global joint research.

The Research Center for Global Economic Systems (GLECS), which was established in 2018, is one of the key components of the HIAS. Researcher fields where Hitotsubashi University excels, including international economics, finance, innovation, development economics, international politics, economic norms, come together at the GLECS to engage in theoretical and empirical analysis of economic systems.

Rapid globalization had made necessary a restructuring of the world economic systems. The GLECS promotes a wide variety of researches, which are expected to provide new insight into the understanding of the global economy and to lead to policy proposals for realizing sustainable growth of Japan and the world.
