HSI2024-25 – the 10th Hitotsubashi Spring/Summer Institute: Economic Development held at Sano Shoin Hall

On March 27, 2025, an international research conference, HSI2024-25 – the 10th Hitotsubashi Spring/Summer Institute: Economic Development was held. It was organized by Prof. Takashi Kurosaki (Institute of Economic Research of Hitotsubashi University) as a part of the research project “Institutions and Policies for Sustainable Poverty Reduction in Developing Countries” which he takes a lead.

The conference was held under the theme of “Economic Development” at Sano Shoin Hall. A total of 5 researchers presented their research, aiming at exploring the frontier of empirical analysis of economic development, especially the datasets and experimental methodology, suitable for specific contexts in South Asia.

The conference opened with the opening remarks by Prof. Kurosaki. After the remarks, 35 participants engaged in discussions in research presentation sessions.

Jun Goto (Assistant Professor at GRIPS), Nadia Hussain (PhD Candidate at Hiroshima University) and Takahiro Sato (Professor at Kobe University) presented “Judicial Independence and Economic Development: Evidence from the Constitutional Reinterpretation in India” [joint paper with Sultan Mehmood (NES) and Daniel Chen (TSE)], “Impact of Government-Exit from Wheat Market on Future Wheat Acreage Decision among Small Farmers: A Vignette-Based Survey Experiment” and “Global Value Chains (GVCs) Participation and the Upgrading of the Indian Auto Components Industry” [joint paper with Manabu Furuta (Aichi Gakuin University) and Keijiro Otsuka (Kobe University)]” respectively. Following that, R. Manjula (Assistant Professor, Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC)) and D. Rajasekhar (Director, ISEC) gave a joint research presentation titled “Paid to Learn: Proposing a New Type of Social Protection based on Evidence from India” [joint paper with Erlend Berg (University of Bristol)], which led to lively discussion with the participants.
